My favorite part of dressing kids for the rain has to be shopping for the perfect children’s raincoat. Who better to call on for your kid’s trench than the designer that invented the look. Children’s Burberry is an adorable and stellar line that prides itself on zero practicality and all classic look. If your children could ever wear a hospital white double breasted trench with classic styling details – you truly deserve a metal. Unfortunately even most adults I know steer away from white coats because they spend more time at the dry cleaner than your closet. Conceptually it’s fantastic, in reality it feels like a frivolous expense because let’s face it – for every thousand moms saturated with apple juice, doused in mud and smudged with finger paint – there’s one whose kids steer clear of a mess.
The more logical route for a growing fashion plate would be a children’s raincoat that has a little more durability and a lot more potential to roll with the punches…and the spills…and the day old chocolate that somehow finds a home in their pocket. With growing kids we’re lucky if the outfit we bought last week is still an option. I tend to go a tiny bit larger with children’s raincoats as opposed to fitted. It lasts longer, it’s year round and it’s something you don’t have to be afraid to invest in.
For kids that can’t seem to be peeled out last years Halloween costume Kidorable has some great options to feed the imagination. Their “Pirate Raincoat” is sure to be a lit with most little boys. Kidorable always seems to provide great rain options that capture the spirit of pretending but still are functional. Western Chief also has a great option with the “Fire Chief Raincoat.”
For girls Hatley makes an adorable daisy coat in a vintage 60’s inspired style. With buttoned front pockets and a synched waist this hooded coat is one of the most stylish ways to brave the rain. Alternatively it also comes in blue with a very cute butterfly print.
Rugged Bear is a great way to keep rain style classic and simple. If you are looking for a perfect pairing for a Hunter Rain Boot the dull yellow Polyurethane Children’s Raincoat may just be the perfect fit. This is a very bare essential brand, adequately priced and extremely durable. Perfect for the ruggedness of a little boy’s life, no frills and cool on the playground. This is a fairly good alternative to higher end brands like Land’s End which sell for almost double the price, if expense is not an issue.
